A New Hope
When I was thinking about how I’d end our last 2023 newsletter for our two weeks break until the New Year, I wanted to come up with something hopeful.
We have so many wars going on, the economy is crushing families, people saying dumb things on social media and just problems seen and unseen going on all around us.
And this time of year, is especially hard on folks.
It is nothing but doomers or black pillers out there telling everyone that everything is bad, and nothing is going in the right direction.
As a Christian, we should know better.
We should be the light of the world.
We have a new hope!
Our hope is in Christ Jesus. Despite everything going on, Christ is the answer and all things we are worried about will not last always.
I offer this hope to you today as we end the year.
And as we go off to celebrate with those loved ones and friends, we have to remind ourselves that faith is the substance of what we hope for even with evidence not seen.
That means when things are bleak our faith sees us through.
A new hope is obviously the title of Star War Episode 4 and was meant to be inspiring.
I hope that is what you take away in this post today.
Our Social Empires.
Life is rough. With pictures on social media of happy families and parents that seem to have it all together we tend to come hard on ourselves.
We tend to look at all our flaws, mistakes and missteps in 2023 as failures.
We mourn the people we have lost, and we think that life is just a series of issues.
And yet, there is hope.
Let me share a story with you that hopefully will make you at least stop being so hard on yourself.
Jesus is Lost
As much as we love Mary and Joseph, the human parents of Jesus, we too understand how being the parents of the living God had to be just as stressful as it is for the rest of us.
We tend to get on our parenting skills, feel bad how we handled a situation or just forget to show ourselves mercy.
But Mary and Joseph had to raise the Saviour. How great that must have been?
Oh, really? Did Mary and Joseph always get it right? You tell me.
In the 2nd chapter of the book of Luke, Jesus is missing. And mom and dad have no idea where he is. That would scare any parent. But imagine losing the Son of God.
Yikes.
It reads:
41 Every year Jesus’ parents would go to Jerusalem for the Passover festival. 42 When he was 12 years old, they went as usual.
43 When the festival was over, they left for home. The boy Jesus stayed behind in Jerusalem, but his parents didn’t know it. 44 They thought that he was with the others who were traveling with them. After traveling for a day, they started to look for him among their relatives and friends. 45 When they didn’t find him, they went back to Jerusalem to look for him.
46 Three days later, they found him in the temple courtyard. He was sitting among the teachers, listening to them, and asking them questions. 47 His understanding and his answers stunned everyone who heard him.
48 When his parents saw him, they were shocked. His mother asked him, “Son, why have you done this to us? Your father and I have been worried sick looking for you!”
49 Jesus said to them, “Why were you looking for me? Didn’t you realize that I had to be in my Father’s house?” 50 But they didn’t understand what he meant.
51 Then he returned with them to Nazareth and was obedient to them.
His mother treasured all these things in her heart. 52 Jesus grew in wisdom and maturity. He gained favor from God and people.
On Sunday our son, Kid Pinky turns 12. And I can’t imagine us losing him for 3 days and/or him knowing what to do. Even if we found him at church!
Any parent would worry, like Mary and Jospeh were.
We know this is a foreshadowing event that talks about Jesus being gone when he died on the cross until he rose again.
But can you even comprehend losing Jesus even if he was just 12? I can’t.
And that is the point.
With all the people of the Bible, throughout history and ourselves, we are imperfect. We make mistakes, have flaws, mess up, have fears and worries.
Yet, we must live our life and our calling. We must build our social empires, so our legacies are better off than we were.
Stop being so hard on yourself.
2023 is about to go in the history books and a new year is coming.
What are you going to do with the time you have left?
I hope with that time, you reflect, and you build.
You stop being hard on yourself, you fix what needs to be fixing, you grow where you need to grow and you become Iconic.
