From Vows to Victory: Overcoming Challenges in a Kingdom Marriage
When you decide to get married, that does not change your spouse into a mind reader or someone that does everything the way you would think to do it. It takes time to get on the same page and in sync’ understanding each other’s communication styles, using emotional intelligence, and love in many ways.
One time, I was offended making Thanksgiving food thinking my husband could just ask me if he wanted some food cooking tips. Cooking was my job in the military and something I do all the time. I was upset because he was looking online instead of asking me.
That was my insecurity, that he didn’t value my knowledge and come to me for help.
Honestly, he just wanted to help out. He didn’t want to add more to my plate so to speak because I had to cook so much that day. He was looking for ways to help me.
We were literally arguing because we were both doing work to help each other and I let an insecurity overshadow my husband’s help. We eventually realize that we both wanted to help each other, and we had to communicate that more clearly. I had to work on my insecurities and realize my husband just wants to help in any way he can.
Marriage is a sacred covenant, reflecting Christ’s love for the Church (Ephesians 5:25-27). Yet, even Kingdom marriages face challenges. The difference lies in how couples rely on God’s Word and His guidance to overcome them. Let’s explore real-world examples of marital struggles, testimonies of victory, and practical, faith-based tips.
1. The Challenge of Communication Breakdowns
Testimony: Sarah and James, a couple married for 15 years, found themselves drifting apart due to busy schedules and unresolved conflicts. “We were talking, but not really listening,” Sarah shared. After attending a marriage retreat, they committed to praying together before every discussion. “It was transformative,” James said. “We started hearing each other’s hearts.”
Scriptural Perspective: James 1:19 reminds us to “be quick to listen, slow to speak, and slow to anger.”
Faith-Based Tips:
Prayer Before Discussions: Invite the Holy Spirit to guide conversations.
Speaking with Grace: Ephesians 4:29 encourages words that build up.
Intentional Listening: Schedule regular “check-ins” to foster trust and clarity.
2. The Burden of Financial Struggles
Testimony: After losing his job, Michael and his wife, Lisa, faced mounting debt. “We were overwhelmed,” Lisa admitted. They turned to Philippians 4:19 and began tithing faithfully despite their limited income. “God provided in ways we couldn’t imagine,” Michael said. “We learned to trust Him completely.”
Scriptural Perspective: Philippians 4:19 assures us, “My God will meet all your needs according to the riches of His glory in Christ Jesus.”
Faith-Based Tips:
Stewardship Over Ownership: Recognize finances as God’s provision.
Joint Budgeting with Prayer: Seek God’s guidance for financial decisions.
Contentment Over Comparison: Hebrews 13:5 reminds us to be content.
3. The Test of Forgiveness
Testimony: Maria and David struggled after David’s hurtful words during an argument. “I couldn’t let it go,” Maria confessed. Their pastor encouraged them to reflect on Colossians 3:13. “When I remembered how much God forgave me, I found the strength to forgive David,” Maria shared. They now practice daily forgiveness.
Scriptural Perspective: Colossians 3:13 teaches us to “forgive as the Lord forgave you.”
Faith-Based Tips:
Daily Acts of Forgiveness: Pray together, releasing grievances.
Remember God’s Forgiveness: Reflect on Matthew 18:21-22.
Accountability in Christ: Seek guidance from spiritual mentors.
4. The Struggle of Spiritual Imbalance
Testimony: When Rachel grew in her faith, her husband, Tom, felt left behind. “I felt like I wasn’t enough,” Tom admitted. Rachel chose to lead by example, showing Christ’s love through her actions. Over time, Tom joined her for Bible study. “Her patience and prayers changed everything,” he said.
My husband wasn’t as devout as a Christian as I. Instead of pushing him and degrading him, I let him, and God work out their own relationship. I did not hole back on my own beliefs and over the years we’ve have deeper discussion. Recently, we’ve been going back to seeking the Kingdom, putting God first in our lives and using that as a model for our kids homeschooling curriculum.
While a relationship with Christ is important to A Kingdom Marriage, our own personal journey with the Lord is still individualistic and a private one. People tend to observe Christians and begin to question things by looking at how following Christ changes us more than in our talking. If you want to help someone find Christ for themselves, the first step is to move like you have Christ in your own life.
Scriptural Perspective: Ecclesiastes 4:12 declares, “A cord of three strands is not quickly broken.”
Faith-Based Tips:
Lead by Example: Show Christ’s love through actions.
Shared Devotions: Incorporate Scripture reading or worship together.
Intercessory Prayer: Pray for your spouse’s spiritual growth.
Final Thoughts:
Challenges in a Kingdom marriage are opportunities for growth and deeper reliance on God. As Proverbs 3:5-6 reminds us,
“Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to Him, and He will make your paths straight.”
By anchoring your marriage in faith, prayer, and God-centered practices, you can turn struggles into testimonies of His glory. Let your marriage be a beacon of hope and love in a broken world.
