How I Prioritize My Health: Empowering Health and Wellness in Your Community
In June of 2024, I had to rush to the ER for abdominal pain. I was diagnosed with a bacterial infection that turned into c. diff. I may have colitis that is an autoimmune disorder or something else. This week, I went to the doctors to figure out what was going on and to get my health back on track. The ordeal has been a headache dealing with different clinics, figuring out my weight loss plan and just doing that on top of other responsibilities.
Thankfully, on Wednesday, I have a new medical team that not only listened to my concerns but pointing me in the direction to get the help I needed with highly trained specialized. This only happened because I had to be my own advocate. If you are not happy with the care you are being given, speak up or go somewhere else. It is imperative you take charge of your healthcare in all aspects.
Living a healthy lifestyle involves more than just eating right and exercising—it encompasses physical, mental, sexual, and spiritual well-being. Fortunately, there are numerous local organizations, community leaders, and resources dedicated to supporting these aspects of health. Use these resources and/or others to help your family get the care that they need.
Local Healthy Organizations
County Health Departments: These departments offer a variety of programs, including health screenings, vaccination clinics, and educational workshops on nutrition and disease prevention1.
YMCA/YWCA: These organizations provide fitness programs, wellness classes, and community events that promote physical health and well-being2.
Local Hospitals and Clinics: Many hospitals and clinics offer free or low-cost health screenings, mental health services, and support groups for various health conditions.
Community Leaders
Community leaders play a crucial role in promoting health and wellness. They often organize events, advocate for health policies, and collaborate with local organizations to address community health needs. For example, Black Men Wellness Day is an event aimed at providing vital health information to underserved communities3.
Health Screenings and Fitness Programs
Regular health screenings are essential for early detection of health issues. Many local organizations offer free or low-cost screenings for conditions such as high blood pressure, diabetes, and cholesterol levels. Fitness programs, such as those offered by the YMCA, provide opportunities for people of all ages to engage in physical activity and improve their overall health2.
Nutrition and Mental Health Resources
Proper nutrition is key to maintaining good health. Local food banks, nutrition classes, and community gardens can help individuals access healthy food options. Mental health resources, including counseling services, support groups, and online therapy, are also available to help individuals cope with stress, anxiety, and other mental health challenges.
Sexual and Spiritual Health
Sexual health education and resources are important for promoting safe and healthy relationships. Local health departments and community organizations often provide information on sexual health, contraception, and STD prevention. Spiritual health can be nurtured through community centers, places of worship, and meditation groups that offer support and guidance.
Conclusion
By taking advantage of the resources and support available in your community, you can take meaningful steps toward achieving and maintaining overall health and wellness. Whether it's through health screenings, fitness programs, nutrition education, or mental health support, there are many ways to empower yourself and others to live healthier lives.
