I am an American Soldier: Going Beyond Thanks, The Unseen Struggles of Veterans and Their Families: A Call to Action
In 2013, I faced difficulties with insomnia and accessing quality healthcare. My husband, who served in the Army alongside me, was supportive. Sensing that something was amiss, we approached the VA. After countless appointments, engaging a lawyer, and dealing with the Veterans Administration's red tape, I was diagnosed with post-traumatic stress disorder, among other conditions.
The journey to find assistance, obtain services, and understand my benefits eligibility was daunting. Now, 12 years on, we are reaping the rewards of our service through meticulous research, the support of specific individuals, and the pursuit of assistance.
Veterans and their families often face a myriad of challenges that extend far beyond our time in service. While much emphasis is placed on the benefits and opportunities available to those who serve, the lasting impacts of military life, both in and out of service, are often less discussed. These struggles can linger for decades for us, affecting every aspect of our veteran life and the lives of our loved ones.
The Hidden Challenges
Transitioning to Civilian Life: Adjusting to civilian life can be daunting. The structure and camaraderie of military service are replaced with uncertainty and isolation. Veterans may struggle to find their place and purpose in a civilian world that feels drastically different.
Mental Health: Many veterans face mental health challenges such as PTSD, depression, and anxiety. These conditions can strain relationships and make daily life challenging.
Physical Health: Injuries sustained during service can lead to chronic pain and disability, requiring ongoing medical care and rehabilitation.
Navigating Benefits: Understanding and accessing veterans' benefits can be complex and frustrating. Many veterans and their families find themselves battling bureaucracy to get the support they deserve.
Career Transition: Finding meaningful employment post-service can be difficult. Veterans often face discrimination or lack the necessary credentials for civilian jobs, despite their extensive experience and skills.
Resources for Veterans and Their Families
We at Iconic are a veteran owned organization and will continue our eSeries talking about resources to help you. It is not only important to us to address issues we see and bring awareness to them but that we provide solutions as well. We want you to be able to get the help and care you need. We will also continue to advocate for veterans to get timely assistance through our own personal knowledge of navigating the system.
Career Support: Organizations like Hire Heroes USA and the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs offer career counseling, resume writing, and job placement services to help veterans transition into civilian careers.
Mental Health: The Veterans Crisis Line provides confidential support for veterans in crisis. Groups like the Wounded Warrior Project offer various mental health resources and support networks.
Benefits Assistance: The VA.gov website offers comprehensive guides and support for understanding and applying for veterans' benefits. Local VA offices can provide personalized assistance.
Support Groups: Organizations like American Legion and Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) offer community and support for veterans and their families, helping them connect with others who understand their struggles.
Educational Programs: The GI Bill provides educational benefits to help veterans pursue higher education or vocational training.
Advocacy and Support
There are numerous advocacy groups working tirelessly to support veterans and their families:
Disabled American Veterans (DAV): This organization helps veterans access benefits and provides support for those with service-related disabilities.
Team Rubicon: Utilizes veterans' skills and experience to provide disaster relief, giving them a sense of purpose and community.
Hope For The Warriors: Focuses on the physical, mental, and spiritual well-being of veterans, providing comprehensive support and resources.
Continue to comeback to Iconic Marriages often for resources that can help you and your families. Do you need personal coaching? Our Iconic marriage and family coaching services are now opened! Whether homeschooling resources, marital issues, veteran disability help, we are here to point you in the right direction.
