Meeting Family Nutritional Needs with Allergies, Prediabetes, and Chronic Illnesses
My family has had to adjust to our dietary requirements since my son was born. Over the last 12 years we’ve been watching out for gluten, wheat, nuts, dairy, sugar and now I have to eat low fiber. We also have a five-year-old that likes to eat what she likes. Juggling all of these different needs has been a lot of work but it can tap into your creative side if you plan ahead. We all are trying to balance my new chronic illness and help my husband lower his blood sugar. Diet is key to our family’s survival, and we plan to do the best we can.
Managing the nutritional needs of a family can be challenging, especially when dealing with allergies, prediabetes, and chronic illnesses. However, with the right resources and support, it's possible to create a healthy and balanced diet that meets everyone's needs. Here are some tips and organizations that can help:
Tips for Meeting Nutritional Needs
Identify Allergies and Intolerances: Keep a detailed list of all family members' allergies and intolerances. This will help you plan meals that avoid trigger foods and ensure everyone's safety.
Focus on Whole Foods: Incorporate plenty of whole foods like fruits, vegetables, lean proteins, and whole grains into your diet. These foods are nutrient-dense and can help manage blood sugar levels and overall health.
Plan Balanced Meals: Ensure each meal includes a balance of carbohydrates, proteins, and fats. This can help stabilize blood sugar levels and provide sustained energy throughout the day.
Read Labels Carefully: Always read food labels to check for potential allergens and hidden sugars. This is especially important for those with allergies and prediabetes.
Cook at Home: Preparing meals at home allows you to control the ingredients and portion sizes. It also helps you avoid processed foods that can be high in sugars and unhealthy fats.
Organizations That Can Help
American Academy of Allergy, Asthma, & Immunology (AAAAI): The AAAAI provides resources and support for families dealing with allergies and asthma. They offer educational materials, advocacy, and research to help manage these conditions.
Food Allergy Research & Education (FARE): FARE is dedicated to improving the quality of life for individuals with food allergies. They provide resources, support, and advocacy to help families navigate the challenges of food allergies.
Asthma & Allergy Foundation of America (AAFA): AAFA offers support and education for families living with asthma and allergies. They provide resources, advocacy, and community support to help manage these conditions.
Food Equality Initiative (FEI): FEI works to increase access to allergy-free and gluten-free foods for families in need. They provide food to families experiencing food insecurity and educate them about nutritional gaps caused by food allergies.
American Diabetes Association (ADA): The ADA provides resources and support for individuals with prediabetes and diabetes. They offer educational materials, recipes, and tips for managing blood sugar levels through diet and lifestyle changes.
By following these tips and utilizing the resources provided by these organizations, families can successfully meet their nutritional needs while managing allergies, prediabetes, and chronic illnesses. Remember, it's all about planning, education, and support. With the right approach, you can create a healthy and happy home for everyone.

Picky Eaters
Dealing with picky eaters can be challenging for parents, but with patience and creativity, it's possible to encourage children to try new foods and develop healthy eating habits. Here are some tips to help you navigate this common parenting hurdle:
Lead by Example: Children often mimic the behavior of their parents. Show them that you're enthusiastic about trying new foods and enjoying a variety of healthy options.
Make Mealtime Fun: Turn mealtime into a fun and engaging activity. Create colorful and visually appealing plates, use cookie cutters to shape foods into fun shapes, and involve your child in meal preparation.
Introduce New Foods Gradually: Don't overwhelm your child with too many new foods at once. Introduce one new food at a time and offer it alongside familiar favorites. This can help reduce anxiety and increase the likelihood of trying something new.
Be Patient and Persistent: It can take several exposures to a new food before a child is willing to try it. Keep offering new foods without pressuring or forcing them to eat. Over time, they may become more open to trying different options.
Create a Positive Mealtime Environment: Keep mealtimes relaxed and enjoyable. Avoid using mealtime as a battleground or using food as a reward or punishment. Encourage positive conversations and make it a time for family bonding.
Offer Choices: Give your child some control over their food choices. Offer a variety of healthy options and let them decide what they want to eat. This can help them feel more empowered and willing to try new foods.
Involve Them in Food Preparation: Involve your child in grocery shopping, meal planning, and cooking. This can increase their interest in food and make them more willing to try what they've helped prepare.
Respect Their Appetite: If your child says they're full, respect their appetite and avoid forcing them to eat. Trust that they will eat when they're hungry and learn to listen to their body's signals.
Offer Healthy Snacks: Provide healthy snacks between meals to ensure they're getting the nutrients they need. Fresh fruits, vegetables, yogurt, and whole grains are good options.
Celebrate Small Wins: Celebrate and praise your child when they try new foods, even if it's just a small bite. Positive reinforcement can encourage them to continue exploring new tastes.
Remember, every child is different, and what works for one may not work for another. Be patient, stay positive, and keep trying different strategies until you find what works best for your family.
Conclusion
Dealing with many different nutritional needs in a family can be a lot. We have to make work what does and adjust as much as we can. For example, gluten free foods sometimes have too many carbs. Reading food labels, watching videos and gaining educational cookbooks can be a life saver.
