Honoring Fathers During Men’s Mental Health Month

I was ready to die. I had lost our baby that was our little miracle. I was sad and needed time to heal. During this time, my husband was strong helping me.
But what about him?
How did he feel losing a child? My husband is the type to take issues like a shot of liquor and keep going. He didn’t have much nurturing growing up so he believed to handle things himself. Things either worked out or they didn’t.
But something changed. When our baby boy, later on, came out and he was not responsive, I saw it. I saw panic on his face for the first time in our 5 years of knowing each other at this time. I saw him worrying whether I and our 1st born would be okay.
Our son is now 13 years old, and he has a great relationship with his dad. My husband never had that growing up, a father that was around, caring, loving, and supportive of him. He broke the cycle himself, but it was not easy.
We have had our ups and downs, my husband even got to spend time with my father. It was much needed mental stability to see a dad that cared, that was there, even to spend time with him and my brother-in-law. My husband saw a flawed man struggled to care and live with a heart condition; he needed that.
He needed an example of a father that despite his flaws, loved his wife and kids instead of running away or not pushing himself to be better.
After my father’s funeral, I saw a new side of my husband. I saw him want to be closer to God. Wondering about all the suffering in the world, he looked for answers. He found his answers in the Kingdom message, the only message Christ preached.
He saw a desire to be a Kingdom citizen which would make him a Kingdom Father.
In the Kingdom Message, Christ told us not to worry but to seek him. That resonated with my husband, that, while not having a good father, he had an eternal one that love him enough to die for him so that he could be a citizen in his Kingdom by forgiveness of his sins! That message was one of hope that my husband had been longing for and that has sparked a new type of motivation in him. It changed his mental health and spirit for the better.
I can’t wait to see what he does with this new hope.
Fatherhood is a sacred calling—one filled with joy, challenges, and the weight of responsibility. In the Kingdom, men are tasked with leading their families with wisdom, strength, and unwavering faith. But what happens when the burden feels too heavy? When stress, grief, and pressures threaten to break a father’s spirit?
This Men’s Mental Health Month let’s talk about the resilience required to be a Kingdom Father, the toxic cycles that can hold men back, and the resources to help fathers stand firm in their calling.

The Mental Battle Fathers Face
Every father carries silent battles—financial pressures, marital struggles, grief, self-doubt. Without emotional resilience, these struggles can take a toll on a man’s ability to lead with clarity and peace.
Real-Life Example: David, a father of three, found himself drowning in exhaustion. Between long work hours and family needs, his mental health suffered, but he refused to talk about it, because “strong men don’t complain.” It wasn’t until his wife urged him to seek help that he realized silence was the real enemy.
Resilience isn’t about never struggling—it’s about confronting struggle with faith.
Toxic Traits That Hold Fathers Back
Unchecked stress leads to unhealthy coping mechanisms. Here are some common self-harming habits men fall into and how to break free from them:
Isolation – Withdrawing instead of seeking support. Solution: Build a circle of trusted men who uplift & hold you accountable. (Proverbs 27:17)
Bottling Emotions – Ignoring pain until it erupts. Solution: Express your struggles in prayer, journaling, or conversations. (Psalm 34:17)
Overworking – Avoiding problems by drowning in tasks. Solution: Prioritize rest—even Jesus withdrew to pray. (Mark 6:31)
Guilt & Self-Doubt – Feeling unworthy of leadership. Solution: God has called you—your worth is secured in Him, not performance. (2 Corinthians 12:9)
How Fathers Can Prioritize Mental Health
Resilience starts with daily habits that nourish the spirit & mind:
Morning Prayer & Scripture – Anchor yourself in God’s truth. (Joshua 1:9)
Quality Time with Family – Focus on connection over correction. (Ephesians 6:4)
Health & Sleep Discipline – A strong body strengthens the mind. (1 Corinthians 6:19-20)
Brotherhood & Support – Find mentors & accountability partners. (Proverbs 17:17)
Real-Life Example: Marcus struggled with deep anger from childhood wounds. Through Christian counseling and mentorship, he learned to process pain through faith instead of frustration. The same man who once lashed out now leads his home with patience and wisdom.

The Hope of a King: Christ’s Gift to Men Struggling with Mental Health
Some folks look to a politician, celebrity, or even their spouse in times of trouble. But there is someone more ever present, more consistent and more everlasting that any person on Earth.
Mental health is just as important as going to the gym, playing video games or climbing the corporate ladder. But as someone who has had mental struggles, there is one answer above them all to get you where you need to be. You must seek him firstly.
Fatherhood and leadership are sacred callings, but for many men, the weight of responsibility, silent battles, and emotional burdens can feel overwhelming. Struggles with mental health often go unspoken, masked by the pressure to remain strong. Yet, Christ offers the hope of a King—a divine promise that men do not have to bear these burdens alone.
Strength in Surrender
In the Kingdom, leadership is not about carrying everything in isolation—it is about surrendering to God’s power. When anxiety, depression, or exhaustion cloud a man’s spirit, Christ calls him to lay his burdens at His feet (Matthew 11:28). A father who struggles is not weak; he is human. And in surrender, he finds strength beyond his own limitations.
Breaking Toxic Cycles
Unchecked struggles can lead to unhealthy habits: isolation, silent suffering, and misplaced guilt. Yet, Scripture reminds us that a wise man seeks counsel (Proverbs 11:14). Christ invites men to break free from toxic cycles by embracing brotherhood, mentorship, and accountability. Healing begins when men recognize that emotional resilience is not about suppressing pain—it is about confronting it with faith.
Christ as the Anchor
David, the warrior king, battled deep distress, yet he anchored his hope in the Lord (Psalm 42:11). Today, fathers and leaders can follow his example by grounding themselves in God’s Word, prayer, and a community of Kingdom-minded men. Hope is not found in perfection—it is found in perseverance through faith.
A Call to Rise
Christ calls every man to rise, not in self-reliance but in divine strength. If you are struggling, know that your identity is secure in Him (2 Corinthians 12:9). Reach out, seek counsel, and walk in the power of hope that Christ freely gives. Because in the Kingdom, a struggling man is not a broken man—he is a growing man.
