Mindful Living: 4 Styles Incorporating Countercultural Values into Everyday Life
Right now, we are having an American cultural crisis. Many people on both sides of the political, social and economic aisle are trying to define what our culture is today.
While this culture war rages on, ordinary Americans are looking to contribute in their own way.
As people argue in the media and online, most of us are left wondering how we can show up and be the kind of culture that represents our personal values.
We see the values of multiple groups representing throughout our country, that is what makes us unique.
But how do we incorporate our more modest, wholesome values as another option amongst the noise?
We do that through mindfulness.
Mindfulness is similar to how we define conscious as an awareness of our surrounding, but mindfulness goes further in that we understand our feelings insides too.
To live mindfully is to live in the moment and reawaken oneself to the present, rather than dwelling on the past or anticipating the future. To be mindful is to observe and label thoughts, feelings, sensations in the body in an objective manner. Mindfulness can therefore be a tool to avoid self-criticism and judgment while identifying and managing difficult emotions. (Source)
Know how we are and how we feel can be shown outward in our dress, home decor, language and more.
We can be the counterculture to all the noise and distractions the powers that be want us to focus on.
Mindfulness living is more peace than we can hope for in the chaos that is our culture wars right now.
Below are 4 Style tips to help you be the counterculture for today’s world.
Style #1: Keep It Simple
You don’t have to spend a whole lot of money and time being mindful in your life and spaces. You can do what works for you leaving the rest of the world out of your business.
Shop at the most convenient places for you only paying attention to boycotts if it serves your vision and goals.
Don’t try to be someone you are not. If you like modesty, be modest. Don’t let the world tell you how you should decorate your home or spaces. Do what makes your family feel protected, comfortable and loved.
That might mean having a homestead or it might mean just growing a small garden in your city apartment roof.
Like what you like, and you can keep as much of that to yourself. Having boundaries to what you share with others even those close to you can keep your day stressfree and more focus on your own goals.

Minimalism makes finding your peace easier because you have less to do and manage. You can obtain simpleness with easy style choices and knowing what you will or won’t use.
That could mean less dishes, less cupboard space and less laundry that bogs your day down.
Being a minimalist isn’t any set of standards but more of a “less is more” approach to life.
Here is a video that can help understand what we mean by minimalist and to apply that to your living space:

Style #3: Color Theory
Using color theory can help you have the style you have always dreamed of for your clothing, your home or office space.
It brightens up a room, matches certain skin tones to certain colors and lets you show your personality in a new way.
What is Color Theory?
Color theory isn’t just one theory. It’s an entire body of practical guidance on mixing colors and the visual effects of certain color combinations. It covers color psychology, additive and subtractive color theory, color harmony, tints, shades, tones, saturation, and more. It is a help in most forms of art like painting and photgraphy, but color theory can be applied to how we dress both for men and women.
Primary, secondary, and tertiary colors are all building blocks on which we can make sound sartorial decisions. Though we go into more detail in our articles on complementary colors, contrast, and dressing for your skin tone, color theory plays a central role in everything that we wear. (Source)
