Strong Dad June: 4 Lessons from Watching My Husband be a Strong Dad In Action
In 2010, we were so excited that we were having a baby. We went to the appointment and heard the heartbeat. And then a few weeks later we lost the baby.
The devastation is captured from my view in my book, “Breaking Fear”. But he was there for me, even the opening quote in the book is his words to me.
And yet, he suffered a loss too.
So, when we had our son in 2011 and then our daughter in 2019, I got the honor of seeing a strong dad up in person!
12 years of wedding bliss and then also parenthood I have learned a lot. And I have learned even more from my husband.
These lessons I hope resonate with you and explains why we celebrate all you wonderful dads this month.
Lesson #1: Learning on the Job
My husband doesn’t have a good relationship with his own father. He had to learn what being a father is from doing it.
One thing I learned from him is that he doesn’t make excuses. He didn’t use the fact that his dad was absent to stop himself from being a good one.
That isn’t to say that he wasn’t emotionally missing something and that the experiences others share with their own fathers doesn’t get to him, but he never lets that stop him from doing his own job and being the dad, he wished he had.
He has been with me since we lost our first baby due to miscarriage and goes above and beyond for his two kids.
He has used trial and error, books, YouTube videos and our own teamwork to be the best dad for my children I could ever ask for.
From sick days, school days, doctors’ appointments, meals and more, Mr. Pinky has been doing the job and doing it well.
He is far from perfect but learns as he goes.
Lesson #2: Building the Bond
My husband is the opposite of me, an introvert and quieter person that makes observations and then shows up to get the job done.
He is brilliant in that he might not know how to do something and yet he goes and figures it out. That is how he did his job in the Army as I watched him grow with no direct leadership teaching him.
And he grows with our son and daughter. He has his own unique style of discipline and of bonding with the kids.
The guys tackle and wrestle each other, and our daughter will drop whatever she is doing if she has the slightest inclination that daddy is nearby.

Lesson #3: Fatherly Leadership
In one of our other articles, we talk about the uniqueness of fatherly leadership.
Visit here:
And my husband bestows that on the Pinkston unit every day. He takes charge.
He makes command decisions of where we have lived and what our future plans will be.
He gave his blessing to homeschool the kids and went to every teacher/principle conference when our son did go.
He teaches our son on his off time even taking him to events that were for the two of them.
He spends lots of time with our daughter building her reading skills and confidence.
Dad duties like hygiene, potty training, teething, diapers and more, this man is all over it.
There was nothing he won’t do for his kids.
He uses tv time to teach our son and we often talk about God and the Bible to instill Godly morality in our children.
From the previous article:
Most kids excel with the guidance, mentorship and push of a good father. From musicians, athletes, businesspersons, fathers impact the direction of their children.
These dads coach, teach, train and are present for their kids dreams. They push them through failures, pain, rejection and pivoting to something more.
Healing is not easy but a must. If you are missing your own dad or the relationship was not great, you need to dig deep because we all need more fathers.
Children desire to live up to the expectations of a father that wants nothing but the best from them or out of them.
My husband digs deep and does his obligation above and beyond the call of duty. He isn’t just the gift giver or the money provider, he teaches, coaches and trains up these children how they should go.
Lesson #4: Honoring Me as His Wife and the Mother of His Children
My husband loves me a lot. Even when I can be annoying (that’s a joke).
And he shows the kids the respect by calling me sweet names, opening doors, asking my opinion on things and working with me as the team we happen to be.
He has taught me how valuable I am to our unit, and he is not shy about telling me things that we can approve on and do better.
He was there with me both times to have these kids and pushed me to do what I needed to do get me and our babies home safely.
He is quick to help me with my fitness, spiritual and mental needs and he is my shoulder to cry on when I needed to cry (Like when my grandmother passed).
He teaches the kids how to give me space to myself when needed, he takes care of them when I need time off and they plot and plan my gifts for birthdays and holidays that tickle me right now just thinking about it.
He sounds too good to be true? He does. And I will not lie to you it took work on both our ends.
We have worked hard to get to where we are, and we use those tools to invest into our content here at Iconic.
Summary
My husband is the best father God could have given me for my children.
In the past, I was depressed because of failure after failure in many of my relationships.
Yet, by the grace of God he had my best friend waiting for me.
A man that did not let his harsh upbringing or bad childhood experiences ruin him but to propel him into the best version of himself.
My lover, fighter, Army battle buddy and friend, I live with a strong dad each and every day.
And as we continue to rear these kids the best of our ability, we are doing something that each of you can do.
We are building and that is what makes our marriage Iconic.
