Strong Dad June: 6 Fictional Dads that We Loved
As we proceed with the month dedicated to celebrating remarkable fathers, I reached out to Icons on Twitter to nominate some beloved fictional dads from the big screen.
The Icons delivered once again.
First Movie: Finding Nemo
My personal choice for an exceptional fictional father is Marlin, Nemo's dad.
While many might choose Mufasa or King Triton, Ariel's father, I opted for a Pixar dad who is excellent but might not be the first to come to mind.
Marlin, though perhaps an overprotective parent, is unwavering in his quest to find his missing son.
Driven by concern, Marlin embarks on a determined mission to reunite with Nemo.
He (Marlin) is the most overprotective and paranoid parent in the ocean. He is one of the biggest worriers, and can't stop giving out safety tips. He is dedicated to bringing up his son Nemo, and also to being there for Dory. Deep down, he is incredibly brave.
Marlin is not good at telling jokes without taking it too seriously and tends to see the downside of any situation.
Second Movie: John Q
In one of his most compelling roles, Denzel Washington stars alongside actress Kimberly Elise, portraying a parent's battle against a failing system to save his son.
Denzel Washington delivers a stellar performance as a father determined to save his son's life.
Faced with exorbitant healthcare costs and his child in dire need of a transplant, he reaches the limits of desperation, contemplating the ultimate sacrifice that any parent would consider—giving a part of themselves.
The film 'John Q' presents a gripping twist as the character navigates the daunting challenges of healthcare expenses in the country.
It showcases a father's unwavering strength, willing to risk everything for his child's chance at life-saving treatment.
This poignant yet uplifting tale masterfully intertwines sorrow and hope, leaving audiences deeply moved in a manner only Denzel can achieve.
Third Movie: The Little Mermaid
Regardless of the version you prefer, the Disney animated and live-action films both delve into the relationship between King Triton and his daughter Ariel.
Ariel is a typical teenager, determined to do things her way despite her father's protective instincts, even if it means venturing into a world for which she is unprepared and unfamiliar.
Throughout their adventures, it becomes clear that nothing can sever the bond between father and daughter, not the challenges on land or sea, nor the threats of an evil sea witch.
Ariel cannot be dissuaded from pursuing her deepest desires, yet she ultimately realizes that the love she sought was with her all along.

Fourth Movie: India Jones
Professor Henry Walton Jones Sr. is a fictional character in the Indiana Jones franchise and the father of the beloved protagonist, Indiana Jones. Both academics, their relationship is a source of enjoyment for fans.
Henry Sr. was fixated on finding the Holy Grail, showing indifference to his son as they connected through their shared passion for history.
Despite their seemingly distant relationship, both father and son took actions that saved each other's lives, even though Henry disapproved of Indy's violent methods. With Henry's fear of rats mirroring Indy's aversion to snakes, the similarities and differences between father and son are evident.
The love of parents for their children transcends time, and that becomes a part of history.
Fifth Movie: Taken
Liam Neeson showcased a unique set of skills in this action-packed film as a father who becomes a formidable opponent when his daughter is kidnapped.
Now a popular meme, "Taken" is a film that many parents fantasize about emulating should their own child be endangered.
It's an intense journey following a father's vow to locate his daughter and bring her safely home. While there are additional films in the series, this one remains particularly resonant for me as a daughter who is close to her father.
When he promised action, he delivered. Certain scenes in the movie made me question whether such scenarios are a reality for the wealthy elite when young girls go missing.
In a world where human trafficking persists, it's heartening to see a father's relentless pursuit to dismantle the perpetrators.
Sixth Movie/Book: To Kill a Mockingbird
This book, often banned, tells a racially charged story of an innocent man and his lawyer, Atticus Finch, who strives to do what is right.
Atticus, more concerned with his children's perception of him than the racist society he is in, does everything in his power to convince a community to free a Black man.
With numerous issues to weigh, Atticus contemplates the right course of action in this classic novel.
Whether banned or not, it is a book that everyone should read for themselves.
Today, people encounter similar dilemmas, and the decision to act rightly is ever-present, especially under the watchful eyes of our children.
