Men’s Health Month: A Call to Action for Today’s Man
My father is my hero. Despite battling numerous health issues such as heart disease, gout, and diabetes, we are grateful he remains with us. His strength throughout this ordeal is unparalleled, and it's one of the many reasons I am passionate about men's health and advocate for wellness in others' lives.
This month-long observance underscores the importance of prevention and early detection of diseases that commonly affect men. But why is this focus on men’s health so critical today?
The Current State of Men’s Health
Statistics show that men are often less likely to seek medical advice or routine check-ups, which can lead to the late diagnosis of critical health issues. Men’s Health Month serves as a reminder that taking care of one’s health is not just a personal responsibility but also a crucial aspect of being there for loved ones.
Key Health Concerns for Men
Heart Disease: The leading cause of death for men in the United States, heart disease can often be prevented through lifestyle changes and regular check-ups. Heart Disease can be a silent killer with no symptoms or minor symptoms until it is too late.
Mental Health: Men are less likely to discuss mental health issues, yet they are not immune to them. Mental health is just as important as physical health, and seeking help when needed is a sign of strength, not weakness. If you need help, the national hotline is 988.
Cancer: Prostate cancer is the second most common cancer in American men. Early detection through screenings can lead to better outcomes. A few years ago, I lost my cousin to cancer, and he left behind his wife, daughters and grandchild.
Why Men Need to Care About Their Health Today
Longevity: Men have a shorter average lifespan compared to women. Focusing on health can close this gap.
Quality of Life: Good health is not just about longevity but also about quality of life. A healthy lifestyle can improve all aspects of life, from physical capabilities to mental sharpness.
Family and Community: Men play pivotal roles in their families and communities. By staying healthy, they can continue to support and nurture their loved ones.
How to Observe Men’s Health Month
Get Screened: Take advantage of health screenings offered during this month. Early detection of diseases like diabetes, hypertension, and cancer can save lives.
Educate Yourself: Use the resources available to learn about men’s health issues and how to prevent them.
Spread the Word: Encourage the men in your life to take their health seriously. Share information on social media and participate in community events.
