Remembering My Grandfather, Chief Master Sergeant George Hawkins
Growing up, my grandfather, George Hawkins, was not just a significant figure in my life; he was the cornerstone of my upbringing. Even though my parents divorced when I was a baby, my grandfather stepped into the role of my primary father figure, embodying the values of strength, perseverance, and unwavering dedication.
George Hawkins dedicated 33 years of his life to active duty in the United States Air Force, achieving the distinguished rank of Chief Master Sergeant. His military career spanned three wars and numerous assignments across the globe, marking him as a hero in the truest sense. He began his service in the Army Air Corps as a gunner sergeant during World War II and played a pivotal role in several key historical events, including the Berlin Airlift. His involvement in the liberation of Jewish concentration camps was a profound experience for him, one that he recounted to me as a young adult, forever shaping his perspective on humanity and justice.

During the Korean War, George served with the same valor and distinction, and he completed two tours in Vietnam, facing the dangers and challenges of combat with the steadfast resolve that defined his character. His assignments took him to various parts of Asia, the Middle East, and Europe, constantly moving between duty stations yet always ensuring his family was well-cared for. He brought back exquisite gifts from his travels, including beautiful China pieces for my grandmother, which have since become cherished family heirlooms.
My mother often described him as strict, likening our household to a perpetual boot camp during her upbringing. However, this strictness was tempered with an unwavering love and commitment to his family. Later in life, he softened his approach but maintained a disciplined routine, a testament to the habits ingrained in him through decades of military service.
After retiring from the Air Force, my grandfather continued to contribute to the field of aerospace by working for Rockwell in Los Angeles. His post-military career was unfortunately overshadowed by a battle with cancer, which he bravely fought for 17 years. His perseverance through this illness was a true reflection of the resilience that characterized his entire life.
One of my fondest memories of my grandfather is from Christmas. He loved the holiday season and made it special for everyone, ensuring that we all had many gifts, especially me and my cousins who were born later. His generosity extended to monumental gifts as well, like my first car, which my uncle Artie (his son) taught me how to drive.
Beyond his familial roles, George Hawkins was a man who commanded respect naturally. As a black man with significant accomplishments in an era rife with racial discrimination, he faced numerous challenges. He once shared with me the humiliation of returning from an overseas assignment only to be forced to drink from a "colored" water fountain. Despite such indignities, he proved his worth through his knowledge and dedication, earning the respect of his superiors and peers alike.
He was a man of quiet faith, never one to be seen attending church regularly, but his belief in God was evident in his actions and the way he lived his life. Growing up poor in a small family in Kansas, he joined the military to escape poverty and to carve out a better future for himself. This background instilled in him a profound empathy and a willingness to help others, always going above and beyond when someone was in need.
My grandfather’s legacy is one of valor, respect, and above all, love. His grit and fearlessness set an example that continues to inspire me daily. Even though he is no longer with us, the lessons he taught and the values he embodied remain deeply ingrained in who I am today.
Reflecting on his life, I realize how much I owe to my grandfather, George Hawkins. He was a man of extraordinary character and resilience, whose life story is a testament to the enduring power of perseverance and integrity. I miss him dearly and strive to honor his memory by living in accordance with the principles he held dear.
Thank you, Grandpa, for everything you did for our family and for your country. Your legacy lives on in each of us, and we are forever grateful for the sacrifices you made and the love you gave so generously.
