Strong Dad June: Start the Celebration off with 5 Lessons from My Father
Clarence Pulley Jr is my dad. A minister, father, grandfather and all-around good man.
Nothing in my life would be where it is without him. And I am starting this month off celebrating the father that I know who taught me so much.
Today, I am sharing 5 lessons from my dad that has stuck with me and hopefully help you.
Lesson #1: God is everything.
No matter what my father had to do or has dealt with, he never forgets Christ Jesus. He leans on the Holy Spirit and will shares the Gospel with whomever will listen.
Most likely that came from his dad Clarence Sr and great grandad too (more good fathers).
He may be an openly flawed man, but he will tell you about the love of Christ for us and how Christ does wonders.
I had that to hold onto when we went to war, when I went through my miscarriage.
The Lord is always with me wherever I go, and I think the love of my own earthly father for that.
Lesson #2: How to be loved as a wife.
My father loves him some Mrs. Nancy. He loves my mom, and they are so cute after 41 years in July and more since they have been together.
My mother’s side of the family love my dad too.
He praises my mom even if there is some criticism. He depends on her. He worked 35 plus years and still does lots in his disability as much as he can.
He serves her. He motivates her even when she might not be. And he always talks wells about her to others.
That is her other half. He never treated my mom like a second-class citizen or used submission as a hammer to hit her with.
Were they perfect? No. But I got to see them fight each other FOR each other.
An Iconic marriage in definition.
Picture at my aunt’s house in 1982 on their wedding day.
My parents’ 10th year anniversary vow renewal in 1992. Can you find me? All my siblings are here. This is at our home church which my parents still attend.
Lesson #3: He taught me the power of education.
My father was strict when it came to us going to school. He pushed me to be top of my class which I did in both K-12 and in college. Plus, I even have my own marriage school now.
My siblings are all raising their kids and excelling in their chosen paths!
He told us not just book smarts, but streets smart too, and I believe that has gotten me far.
But what my father still does is teaches us HOW to think not what to think. He might nudge us into his way of thinking with his speaking skills but at the end of the day, he allows us to be the adults he raised us to be.
He doesn’t allow us to use excuses even though life may be unfair.
He has been involved in all our schooling from day one from PTA meetings, coming when we got in trouble and every award ceremony and graduation.
Watching him push our children as grandpa is so sweet too.
My dad used to stay up all night after a long work shift driving a bus or truck and check on us with our homework or projects.
He would do what it took to make sure we all crossed the stage or got what we needed.

Lesson #4: That we are loved
My dad kissed us every night. He hugged us every day and he always taught us that he loved us.
We learned a prayer to say whenever we would depart each other that our family now says each day.
We may have gotten in trouble; we may have needed discipline and correction but everything he did was from the bottom of his heart.
When I got the news in Iraq in 2008 during the middle of my first deployment that my father had a heart attack, my heart sunk. I thought my world was over IN THE MIDDLE OF A WAR ZONE.
My leadership team told my mom to get me home and she did. I flew as fast as I could from Iraq to Maryland.
Nothing was harder than seeing him in that hospital bed. I was still in my Army uniform turning into that little girl that need her dad.
When my grandmother died, I was there with my husband but still needed to hug my dad.
I need him more than anything and I am so glad that he is still here with us 15 years later.
He gets thoughts in his head and wants to share them with me, he will call me. He called me his best friend which made me cry.
In a house full of 8, he knew how to make each one of us feel special in our own way.

Lesson #5: That I can do all things through Christ that strengthens me
I have a lot of fears and phobias. But my dad has put confidence in me. When I told him I was going to war, he was sure I would not die over there and told me to do what I had to in order to come home.
At my boot camp graduation, he knew I would make it through and told me so.
When I almost drowned, he was there for me.
Even in his tough love when I might not have understood as a child, he expected the best from us. He would push us to get in shape, to read, to love the Lord but not to be just robots but because he believed in us.
I don’t think there is a sibling I have that doesn’t think they can do things when around him.
He pushes us in all our works and even talks to our spouses and kids.
My insecurities came from a lack of wisdom, and it took me a while to get what my dad was trying to teach me about me and for finding love/getting married.
But he was my first love. And that he knew, for example, a few of my exes wouldn’t work out. But as crazy kids we don’t always listen.
He told me how he liked how my husband didn’t control me and he watched him.
My father is where my cockiness comes from, I am just like him (good and bad) so we bump heads.
But that man is my father, my friend, my mentor, my spiritual leader, my everything.
