The 2025 Historical Snowstorm: A Nation's Resilience
It was magical.
Being from Maryland, I have seen the 1996 blizzard but living in Georgia for 13 years, we only had one snow dusting during that time. For context, our son just turned 13 and he has never seen snow in real life. Until this week.
Then it happened. I don’t even think I did what I knew to prepare because it is just so rare to see snow where we lived. And it happened.
SNOW.
My son, daughter, husband and I got to experience snow at our two-story home for the first time in 8 years of living here. We threw snow at each other, made snow angels and played as much as we cold in the frigid temperatures.
I know people from New York and Minnesota might’ve laughed at all the crazy reports from Louisiana, Florida, Texas and us here, but we aren’t used to all of this. It was amazing. It was a little scary too as reports of car accidents, people needing help and more pour in.
We just continue today to watch it thaw and keep our kids warm. We thank all those who continue to send tips and prayers as we pray for all those in other states. We send out love to family and fellow Americans in California, too. Our hearts are with you.
The 2025 historical snowstorm will be remembered as one of the most significant weather events in recent history. A powerful winter storm swept across the southern United States, bringing unprecedented snowfall and causing widespread disruptions. This blog post outlines the issues faced, records set, and the incredible efforts of emergency personnel. It also provides tips for families to prepare for the remainder of the winter season and future national disasters.
Issues Faced During the Snowstorm
The snowstorm brought major impacts to the southern half of the United States, with cities like Atlanta, Georgia, experiencing hazardous conditions and numerous flight delays. Over 120,000 people lost power, particularly in Georgia, where the storm had the most significant impact since the 2014 winter storm1. The storm also caused over 3,000 flight cancellations, leading to the most significant daily delays since July 2024.
Record Snowfall Totals
The snowstorm set new records across the nation. In Florida, Milton recorded 9.8 inches of snow, breaking the previous state record. Pensacola also saw an all-time record with 8.9 inches2. Louisiana experienced its first-ever blizzard warning, with New Orleans recording 8 inches of snow, the most since 1895. Texas saw its first-ever blizzard warning, with Beaumont recording 5.2 inches of snow2. Mobile, Alabama, recorded 7.5 inches, the highest in over 60 years.
Thanking Emergency Personnel
The efforts of emergency personnel during the snowstorm were nothing short of heroic. In Georgia, the Georgia Department of Transportation (GDOT) pre-treated over 20,000 miles of roadways with brine and applied 770 tons of salt to bridges and overpasses. Over 300 snowplows and 600 personnel worked around the clock to clear roads4. Local warming centers were activated, and state parks served as warming stations for those seeking refuge from the cold. The coordinated efforts of state and local agencies ensured that resources were in place to address the hazardous conditions4.
Family Preparations During the Snowstorm
Families across the nation took various measures to prepare for the snowstorm. Stocking up on essential supplies, such as food, water, and medications, was a priority. Many families ensured they had flashlights, batteries, and blankets on hand in case of power outages5. Preparing vehicles with emergency kits, including shovels, sand, and extra warm clothing, was also crucial.

Preparing for the Remainder of the Winter Season
As the winter season continues, families should remain vigilant and prepared for potential future storms. Here are some tips to help you stay safe and ready:
Stock Up on Supplies: Ensure you have enough food, water, and medications to last at least three days.
Winterize Your Home: Insulate pipes, seal windows and doors, and have a safe heating source.
Prepare Your Vehicle: Keep an emergency kit in your car, including blankets, a shovel, and sand or kitty litter for traction.
Stay Informed: Monitor weather forecasts and follow local authorities' advice.
Creating a Family Emergency Plan
Having a family emergency plan is essential for any national disaster. Here are some steps to create a plan:
Discuss Emergency Scenarios: Talk with your family about potential emergencies and how to respond.
Establish Communication: Choose an out-of-area contact person and ensure everyone has their contact information.
Designate Meeting Places: Identify two meeting places—one near your home and one outside your neighborhood.
Practice Your Plan: Regularly practice your emergency plan with your family to ensure everyone knows what to do.
The 2025 historical snowstorm tested the resilience of communities across the nation. By learning from this event and taking proactive steps, families can better prepare for future winter storms and other national disasters. Stay safe, stay prepared, and remember to thank the emergency personnel who work tirelessly to keep us safe.

We've had snowfall totals here in NC like those mentioned in the article, and even greater totals. Just half of those totals is enough to shut things down around here for a few days.
