The Magic of Marriage: 9 Steps to Make Everyday Life More Meaningful
People love to lead every conversation about marriage with how hard it is. Even I will tell you it ain’t easy.
Duh, we all know.
Everything we do in life is difficult. And yet, people want to constantly remind others that marriage is hard.
Why wouldn't it be? Two totally different people are embarking on a life together from two different backgrounds, two different circumstances on a path to build a legacy.
There isn't two people in the world that have a relationship that isn't difficult.
Yes, even grandparents and grandchildren.
And yet, whenever we talk about marriage people have to make it sound like slavery.
Even in cultures with arraigned marriages, they tend to last a long time.
I like Being Married. And so many other couples do too
Marriage is difficult because we have to give up so much of ourselves.
But if you ask anyone who has done this a long time, we are supposed to gain as well.
In this book, “I Like Being Married” by Michael Leach and Therese J. Borchard it has a compilation of married couples who discuss being married and actually enjoying it.
The book comes with perspectives from couples of different races, religions, time periods and cultures to discuss marital bliss.
And the truth of being in a long-term partnership.
How did these couples have that special magic that make them love being in their relationships and how can you have it too? Iconic will help you.
These are the 10 core steps to making married life more meaningful.
Step #1: Being the Best Version of You
I value my healthy: spiritually, physically, and mentally because of my marriage. I work to be the best version of me so that I can show up for me, my husband and my kids. I work through my own flaws and work on delivering the best education to my children while managing a business. All of this a disabled combat veteran-which I could use as an excuse to do nothing. Fix what you must. I am better because of my union.
Step #2: Becoming a parent
Raising kids is hard, but people will do it. People will even do it alone. But what I love about having a spouse is the new side of them you see. You share diapers, teething, and medical emergencies. You talk about discipline, family trips and education. The magic in our marriage is strengthen when we work to foster the best environment for our son and daughter. Parenthood will make or break a relationship.
Step #3: Get Rid of the Threat of Divorce
People hang divorce over couple's head if they show one ounce of being happy online.
Funny though, how we are supposed to listen as people whine and complain about their sorrow online and want that for ourselves?
We are supposed to watch the tv shows filled with drama and the constant barrage of media that tell us oh how terrible marriage is and if you try it, it's like a prison sentence you just have to accept and take it on the chin.
Ignore those who are bitter that tell you that a lasting Iconic marriage isn’t worth the effort and talk to people who are doing it! We can give you the courage that this can be done.

Step #4: Make Your Marriage Worthy
A marriage should not rest on the whether or not being in a committed relationship is hard.
It should hinge on whether my happiness is worth that effort. And you should be asking yourself during the dating stage not just so enamored with an orgasm that you let the wrong head do the thinking for you.
You should become one on a mission to do whatever to seal your legacy and create generational success.
Step #5: Make Your Union Priority
Honor, respect and have integrity in your relationship. Put them first, yes, even before the children.
Your kids do not come first. You kids will not always be with you and if you let your marriage fall because you two have become parents, when the kids are gone so will your marriage be.
Marriage is something you wake up every day.
We miss all the red flags and signs in past relationships. Now that we are here, we should value our marriage and put it front and center. You are married 24/7, with your spouse, when they aren’t around and with your online footprint.
Your marriage is meaningful to others if they can see it is meaningful to you.
Step #6: Do the Work
Having pets is hard, a job is hard and anything else we do from voting, to working to even playing can be hard. So marriage isn’t going to magically work on its own.
So, what?
It means you have to roll up your sleeves and get busy. You have to learn communication, learn how to argue fairly, learn how to budget your finances, and fill in any emotional gaps your parents did not.
A meaningful relationship comes from doing what it takes to make it that way. And if you are not ready, do not bother someone else.
What if you don’t know how to do this type of work?

Step #7: Make Preparations for the Unknown
I know, people lie. But your boss can lie too, your pastor can lie, that salesman at the Gucci store lies all the time; we are dealing with people.
Just like anything else we do, marriage can be planned and prepared for.
You can prepare for medical and death through life insurance, you can have an emergency fund with 1-6 months of expenses saved up, you can grow a garden for food and store 1/2 a cow of meat in a deep freezer.
We don’t know what tomorrow will bring but planning ahead for some of the known issues that can come will show how much the future means to you and your family.
Step #8: Set your own boundaries.
You can have boundaries as a couple and as individuals. When will you host a holiday gathering? How late can people call your home? What decisions can each of you make alone or need to consult the other?
The magic here is respecting your own boundaries and those of your spouse.
Yeah, people do have a lot on their lists. That doesn't mean not to have standards or a list at all.
Step #9: Have Confidence
You are amazing and your spouse thinks so too. Get rid of those insecurities by reading, working out or going to the dentist (I hate my teeth) and fix the things you think are bothering you.
Insecurity can breed other harsh emotions and actions that can jeopardize your marriage.
Some people leave their spouses after “Finding Themselves” because they lost who they were as individuals in a relationship (that is for you to control not your spouse).
Remember your spouse is someone to lean on not someone to compete with when you are doing you.
My point? Marriage can be the love of your life and the happiness of your dreams.
You can have an Iconic relationship. And it will be effort.
Lots of people do not want to do the work and so they lie.
You can love being married.
You can love your spouse.
You can enjoy being a spouse.
You can smile coming home.
Let us dispel the myths that toxic society has plagued our youth with that true love is a fairy tale or that it is something that does not exist!
The lies.
True love demands planning.
True love demands action, love is an action word not just a noun.
True love is available if you are willing to look for it.
True love takes time. Many people rush into relationships missing all the potential issues.
It isn't the once-a-year vacations that make a marriage. It is the things you say before you leave for work, the time at the dinner table and the tv shows you watch before bedtime.
It is the deeper conversations you have about your spirituality, about your career plans, how you plan to raise children in this world.
What are your political philosophies? Where do we go when we die?
Why should I spend the rest of my life tied to you?
These are the point of a relationship people do not worry about until it is on the verge of breaking down.
It is like oxygen. People don't worry about it until they need it.
They don't think about breathing until not being able to becomes an issue.
I like my life as a wife. Mrs_Pinky isn't just a brand; it is who I am.
In today's newsletter, I pulled from the book "I like Being Married: Treasured Traditions, Rituals and Storied" Edited by Michael Leach and Therese J. Borchard an anthology of quotes from married couples across all walks of life and quotes about love from film, entertainment, religion and philosophy.
The authors chose this path to show us that being married can be something we like and enjoy.
Each chapter is a new section filled with different quotes from all through history.
One Chapter: "It's been here a long time" or the other "With this ring", showing you that the marriage institution has stood the tests of time.
I like being married.
I don't mean love; love isn't the right word here. For example, you might love to eat but that doesn't mean you like doing the dishes.
You can love your spouse and not like who they have become. They can have grown cold, even mean.
No so we aren't saying you love marriage. Because once you are in you are in.
We want you to like being married. You like that you are a wife/husband. You don't feel like you are tethered to your mate through a prison chain.
You have a meaningful relationship that all you do extends from there.
You like hearing them say your name.
You like when they ding you on a text message to tell you they are on their way home.
You like something you saw online and cannot wait to tell them.
You genuinely like being in a monogamous relationship where the idea of entertaining other folks in this sort of intimate way isn't even in your mind at all.
You like them even when you can't stand them. You like the way laugh so loudly but when they aren't around the missing laugh is deafening.
You like how they motivate you, how they awaken your soul.
You like how they look at you and how they see you as more beautiful than you will ever know.
You like how none of this is bull and you do not have to pinch yourself awake.
I am not saying your life everything, we are human of course.
But what I am saying is that you like marriage.
You like having a spouse. You like sharing a house. You like the fact you have kids, or you have none.
You are genuinely at peace with what you have built or what you are building.
And if something is wrong, you like that you can count on them to help you out.
This week we are talking about actually liking marriage and getting other couples to a place where they too can like being in this arrangement forever.
We want them to have Iconic marriages, marriages with intent that mean everything to them and the legacies they plan on building.
These are the relationships that build dynasties, create better social empires, build wealth and shape a community that shapes a nation.
I like being married and that sort of magic that we have created together in our own unique way.
And you should too, while remembering to be Iconic.
