Good Thursday morning, Icons
Welcome to a new post from today’s Iconic newsletter where we work to empower men and women to have the marriage of their dreams and to create dynasties that last.
We are celebrating Black History and the month of love with women’s empowerment.
What better way to evaluate them all than through our music.

The Power of Communication through Music
Ladies, what love song comes to mind when you know we are going to talk about music. What have you communicated to someone you thought of with lyrics? Is there something or someone that a song sits in your soul?
I know you are humming it right now.
Did you know that Music is a communication tool AND a love language?
From Vibe Music Academy article on “Music: The Real Love Language
“We use music to communicate with each other, no matter how direct it is. By singing/playing an instrument to someone, the intimacy of the moment increases as the two engage in an alternate language, or one that scientifically alters the state of the brain…”
Yes, we can use music for all sorts of reasons and throughout history, musicians, entertainers and song writers have used their skills to tell stories about love from all angles.
How the Legends gave us music to convey our love to our beloved
Some of us were born thanks to the beauty of a song.
And many of you can think of your favorite love song off the top of your head!
Amazing isn’t it. The power of music to communicate so much through the pitch of a note, the tune to tap your foot and the lyrics that pierce your soul.
Music is a love language too and with it comes an array of historical figures that are part of the stories that only legends can make.
Iconic marriage starts with the dance of the tune at a party, the walking down of the bride at the reception to her favorite tune, the boy who wooed a girl with the mixtape he just played.
Yes, Music is a form of communication, and we can explore how in Black History music was able to share our love with the world.
Which music do you use to show you are in love?
Depending what generation, you are from might determine what genre of music you get your love songs from.
Sorry, I am generation y, and the list might have songs that you do not like.
What is cool about this being combined with Black History is that it spans different genres, styles and artist.

Love Music
The mix of talent, genres, generations all express one sentiment, it is all out of the love.
We can use the tunes these people create and the records/album that were produced to shower our love and it is great.
Here is a list of some songs and artist you may know from the post by HBCU Buzz:

As you can see, music transcends time. It crosse-music types and cultural to the mainstream. Most artist have one or two love songs under their belt for the power of love is grand and it increases ticket sales. Look at how Whitney Houston remastered Dolly Parton’s “I will Always Love You” many youngsters don’t know Miss Dolly had this one first. (A legend with her own Iconic marriage, ladies)
Importantly, that is okay. People can choose which one they enjoy.
EFFECTIVE COMMUNICATION THROUGH MUSIC
Sometimes the lyrics and melodies from songs can say what we want better for us to our beloved.
We choose songs that soothe, that sweeten, and that graces the hearts of those we care for.
And we have been doing it for generations and bring in the next.
How does history play a role?
“In terms of Black music history, country music is one of the oldest genres we can trace – for example, in 1678, Martinique provided the first mention of banjo-like instruments in the Western Hemisphere, which evolved from similar instruments used in west Africa.”
Black Music History: Years of Music Development | Audio Network UK
Black history and the cultural aspect of music is vast.
With the history of country, rock, soul and the revolutionary twist of hip-hop borne out of the lack of music classes in Brookyln, Black people are to music as we are to food, fashion and movies.
And that includes how we love, why we love and who we love.
Making history in 1924 was Bessie Smith, dubbed the ‘Empress of the Blues’, when she became the highest-paid African American performer in America after signing a contract with the Theater Owners Booking Association (TOBA).
We have so many artists that worked hard to shape the landscape of music by doing the things they loved.
And we as listeners were able to play these songs while we dated, at the clubs and night venues and in our house parties.
Music was the language we used to convey, fun, life and love.
Even now, the most modern music has love songs.
In fact, it causes some trouble in religious circles because artist like Ray Charles would take a “church song” and change into some secular party music that people were shaking their butts too and offended many parishioners.
You can see the controversy in many life documentaries like Ray or the “Respect” movie about the Queen Aretha Franklin.
Music is not without its share of scandals, crime and stories.
And yet, it still reaches us in our inner most being. It still connects us all.
History Matters
As much as we fuss and fight about the issues we have, it is not all bad.
We can still, in the midst of struggle, find and keep love.
Many that are bitter would say otherwise. But when you find the one, you know I am right.
Because it is something about real and for sure love that keeps us going and never giving up.
The Black American experience is a unique one and has been able to go above and beyond cultures, thanks for the talents of many individuals.
A major cultural milestone was achieved by Kendrick Lamar in 2018, when he was awarded the Pulitzer Prize, for his album ‘DAMN’. He is the first non-classical/jazz artist to be honoured in that category, with the Pulitzer committee commending the album’s, ‘affecting vignettes, capturing the complexity of modern African-American life.’ (Source)
As more and more artist work to dominate their craft, we as consumers get more material to express. ourselves. Effective communication in any relationships is important to establish trust, loyalty and faith in each of the members. In marriage, too many times, we take what we say and how we say it for granted.
We get into a pattern of normalcy and often forget that our partners are not mind readers or static. They need to be reminded often of the appreciation for all they do and not just around holidays. Sometimes with the business of life we forget what matters most and can almost lose them.
Using music to effectively demonstrate the deep and intimate feelings we have, the sexiness we still share, and the hot and steamy passion that only our mates deserve is a skill to master over time.
Simply put, when you learn the power of music as the 6th love language, you will be on your way to greatness.
Use what is available to you to celebrate the love this month. And in everything you do, be Iconic.
