The Principle of Oneness: A Reflection on Holy Week and Unity in Marriage
As soldiers in the military, we are taught to look out for each other and have each other’s backs. We fight as one. In fact, an old Army slogan was “Army of One” which some people were confused about. It just meant all of us moved, worked, and performed as one entity to meet the goals of the United States of America.
My husband and I were in the same company, the same platoon and even under the same squad leader in the Army. We were best friends and battle buddies, showing up to do work together through two deployments and years of service going through the ranks together. We were a team and we worked as one.
We anticipated each other’s needs, helped fulfill whatever tasks came our way, and fell in love, too. Yet, that was not the end for us. In 2011, we got married after suffering a miscarriage a few months prior. Our relationship was one of unity going through joy and pain together until today.
Recently, we watched as our family’s matriarch lay our father to rest. In her tears, she talked about her love from her teen years, a relationship that will never be the same due to God calling dad home. They had a certain rhythm raising 6 children, teaching us about Christ’s love especially during Holy Week, instilling in us the unity that only two parents can show, and then my mom spent the final years of my dad’s life taking care of him.
As we enter Monday of Holy Week—a time when Christians worldwide reflect on the path Christ took to His ultimate sacrifice—our hearts are drawn to the themes of unity, sacrifice, and love. These themes, beautifully embodied in Christ's death, burial, and resurrection, also resonate deeply within the sacred covenant of marriage.
In Genesis 2:24, the Word of God says,
"That is why a man leaves his father and mother and is united to his wife, and they become one flesh."
This verse lays the foundation for the Principle of Oneness—a spiritual, emotional, and physical unity between husband and wife that mirrors the profound relationship between Christ and His Church.
Oneness in Marriage: A Sacred Reflection
The concept of oneness in marriage is much more than mere partnership; it is an intentional and God-designed fusion of two lives into one. Just as Christ gave Himself fully to reconcile humanity to God, so too are spouses called to give themselves completely to each other—standing united in purpose and love.
Spiritual Unity: When a couple places God at the center of their relationship, they align their union with His divine purpose. Prayer, worship, and shared devotion deepen this bond, just as Christ’s relationship with His followers deepens through faith.
Emotional Unity: Through open communication, forgiveness, and mutual respect, couples nurture a safe and loving environment. On Holy Week, we remember Christ’s ultimate act of forgiveness on the cross—a forgiveness that we, too, are called to extend in our marriages.
Physical Unity: The act of becoming "one flesh" reflects not just physical intimacy, but also the vulnerability and trust required to truly connect as one. It is a living testimony of God's design for closeness and love.
Lessons from Holy Week for Marital Oneness
Holy Week offers profound lessons on how the Principle of Oneness can be lived out in marriage:
Sacrificial Love: Christ's journey to the cross was one of selflessness and surrender. In marriage, self-sacrifice is vital—placing your spouse's needs above your own and giving of yourself freely for the good of your relationship.
Resilience Through Trials: Jesus endured rejection, suffering, and death out of love for humanity. Similarly, oneness in marriage requires standing united through life’s trials, trusting that God’s strength will see you through.
Hope in Resurrection: Christ's resurrection reminds us that even in the darkest moments, there is hope. In marriage, this hope inspires couples to persevere and grow, knowing that God's grace can restore and renew.
Standing Together in a Fractured World
In a world filled with challenges, distractions, and divisiveness, the Principle of Oneness stands as a beacon of strength. A marriage rooted in oneness is not just about being a team—it is about being a testimony. It is a witness to God’s love and a reflection of His covenant with us.
As we commemorate Holy Week, let us take time to not only reflect on Christ’s sacrifice but also to renew our commitment to the sacred unity of marriage. Just as Christ gave everything for His bride, the Church, so too are we called to give fully to our spouses, embodying love, grace, and resilience.
May this Holy Week inspire us to live out the Principle of Oneness in our marriages and in our walk with Christ.
