Transforming Lives Through Thankfulness: The Law of Gratitude
Even though I had family members die, I have been eternally grateful for them in my life. My dad was always telling us how much and how thankful to God he had my mom and my brother was always proud of his family.
Were we perfect? Far from it. But thanksgiving was a spirit that ran through my family as much as we could. That’s why, despite the sadness, I can take solace in knowing that they lived full lives.
I am thankful that soon my husband and I will celebrate 14 years of marriage. I am thankful that God has spared me in many occasions when I could have lost my own life, and I am thankful for the extended lives my father and brother had as they were fighting life-threatening illnesses.
It seems that I should be mourning in dead sadness but I am also in a spirit of thanksgiving for all I still have, all the loving family I have left and the ability to still do this Iconic work while I fight Crohn’s.
I also thank you, Iconic reader, for taking time out of your day to be with us.
The Law of Gratitude
Biblical Foundation: 1 Thessalonians 5:18 – “Give thanks in all circumstances; for this is God's will for you in Christ Jesus.”
Gratitude is more than a polite "thank you"—it's a transformative practice that shifts our perspective, deepens our relationships, and aligns us with God's will. The Apostle Paul’s words in 1 Thessalonians 5:18 remind us that gratitude is not conditional on our circumstances but is a constant posture of the heart. Let’s explore how embracing the law of gratitude can bring joy, strengthen bonds, and draw us closer to God.
Gratitude Changes Perspective
Life is full of ups and downs, but gratitude allows us to see beyond our immediate struggles. By focusing on God’s goodness and blessings, we can find peace even in challenging times. Gratitude shifts our attention from what we lack to what we have, fostering contentment and hope. It’s a reminder that God’s grace is sufficient, no matter the situation.
Example: Imagine facing a tough financial season. Instead of dwelling on the stress, take a moment to thank God for the roof over your head, the food on your table, and the people who support you. This shift in focus can bring clarity and renewed strength to tackle challenges.
Strengthening Emotional Bonds
Gratitude is a powerful tool for building and maintaining relationships. When we express thanks to those around us, we affirm their value and deepen our connection. In marriage, for example, regularly thanking your spouse for their love and support fosters emotional intimacy and mutual respect.
Example: A husband who thanks his wife for her hard work in managing the household not only uplifts her but also strengthens their partnership. Similarly, a wife who expresses gratitude for her husband’s efforts creates an environment of appreciation and love.
Fostering Joy Through Gratitude
Joy is a natural byproduct of a grateful heart. When we practice gratitude, we open ourselves to the beauty and blessings of life, no matter how small. This joy is contagious, spreading to those around us and creating a ripple effect of positivity.
Example: Start a gratitude journal, listing three things you’re thankful for each day. Over time, you’ll notice a shift in your outlook, as gratitude becomes a habit that brings joy and peace.
Practical Ways to Live Out the Law of Gratitude
Daily Prayer of Thanks: Begin and end each day by thanking God for His blessings. This practice keeps your heart aligned with His will.
Express Gratitude to Others: Take time to thank the people in your life—family, friends, coworkers—for their kindness and support.
Serve as an Act of Gratitude: Show your thankfulness by serving others, whether through volunteering, helping a neighbor, or simply offering a listening ear.
Celebrate Small Wins: Recognize and celebrate even the smallest victories, as they are reminders of God’s faithfulness.
The Eternal Impact of Gratitude
Gratitude is not just a fleeting emotion; it’s a spiritual discipline that draws us closer to God. By giving thanks in all circumstances, we acknowledge His sovereignty and trust in His plan. This act of faith not only transforms our hearts but also serves as a testimony to others, inspiring them to seek the joy and peace found in Christ.
Closing Thought: The law of gratitude is a divine invitation especially inside Kingdom Marriages to live a life of joy, connection, and purpose. As we cultivate a grateful heart, we align ourselves with God’s will, strengthen our relationships, and experience the fullness of His blessings. Let gratitude be the lens through which you view the world and watch as it transforms your life and the lives of those around you.
BREAKING FEAR
In 2022 I published my first book, "Breaking Fear” which detailed my miscarriage and the fears I experienced from that time in my life. In 2024, I re-released the book adding epilogue about my daughter's birth. Fear was trying to break me.
However, fear would once again its ugly head in my life.
On February 6, 2025, and February 24, 2025, both my dad and brother passed away. Their deaths have forever impacted me. Through this, I learned fear never stops trying to rear its ugly head in my life.
In fact, I have many fears: of planes, drowning, or of leaving my kids in this chaotic world. Yet, calls my faith calls me not to worry. This is how I discovered His Kingdom message I share with you all here on Iconic.
In Matthew 6:33: Jesus speaks to his disciples who are worried about their basic needs He tells not worry and instructs them to Kingdom of and to live righteously. God gives us the blueprint on how not to be afraid.
Today, I also encourage you to fear not by reading my books for strength during tough times. Subscribe to our Iconic Marriage platform monthly to get our Breaking Fear eBook or yearly to get it in print. We encourage you not to let fear hold you back or stop you from your Iconic marriage.
Break fear be free.
How can couples practice more gratitude?
Couples can practice gratitude in ways that deepen their connection and foster joy. Here are some ideas:
Start a Gratitude Journal Together: Dedicate a notebook to jot down things you're thankful for about each other daily or weekly. Reflecting on these entries can strengthen your bond.
Express Thanks Daily: Make it a habit to thank your partner for small acts of kindness, like making coffee or listening to your concerns. These moments of appreciation add up.
Celebrate Milestones: Whether it's an anniversary or a personal achievement, take time to express gratitude for the journey you've shared and the growth you've experienced together.
Create a Gratitude Ritual: Set aside time each week to share what you're grateful for in your relationship. This could be during dinner, a walk, or before bedtime.
Volunteer Together: Giving back to the community is a powerful way to practice gratitude. It reminds you of your blessings and strengthens your teamwork.
Pray or Meditate on Gratitude: If you're spiritually inclined, pray or meditate together, focusing on the blessings in your lives and relationship.
Write Letters of Appreciation: Occasionally write heartfelt letters to each other, expressing what you love and appreciate about your partner.
Focus on Positives During Conflict: Even in disagreements, take a moment to acknowledge the good in your partner and your relationship. This can help resolve conflicts with empathy.
These practices not only cultivate gratitude but also create a foundation for a stronger, more joyful partnership
