What I learned about Trade School from My Dad: A Viable Option for Parents and Students
A lot of people will tell you that they were told just to go to college to secure a future. That was not my upbringing. In fact, my dad and mom made sure we knew about other avenues to getting ahead in life. My dad went to a vocational high school and made it a point that we could become workers in trades if college was not for us. My dad, in fact, was the one that talked me into joining the Army after I dropped out of college the first time.
Being professional drivers, my parents never told us just to do traditional school. My dad first with his CDL and my mom following suit, we’ve seen that having multiple options to get ahead is the better plan that what most Western society tells our youth.
My dad even relayed trade school as a viable option to my cousins, kids at my church and remind us today, that he was already telling us that trades were a possibility to a great future.
Why Trade Schools?
Cost-Effective Education: One of the most significant advantages of trade schools is their affordability. With rising tuition fees at traditional colleges, many families find themselves burdened with substantial student loan debt. Trade schools, on the other hand, typically have lower tuition costs and shorter program durations, making education more accessible and financially manageable.
Hands-On Learning: Trade schools emphasize practical, hands-on training that prepares students for real-world scenarios. This approach ensures that graduates are job-ready and possess the technical skills employers are looking for. Whether it’s welding, plumbing, electrical work, or healthcare, students gain valuable experience that sets them apart in the job market.
High Demand for Skilled Trades: There is a growing demand for skilled tradespeople across various industries. As the baby boomer generation retires, there is a significant gap in the workforce that needs to be filled. Trade school graduates often find themselves in high demand, with opportunities for stable and lucrative careers.
Shorter Time to Employment: Unlike traditional four-year degrees, trade school programs are designed to be completed in a shorter time frame, often ranging from a few months to two years. This means students can enter the workforce sooner, start earning an income, and gain valuable work experience without the extended time commitment of a traditional college education.
Diverse Career Opportunities: Trade schools offer programs in a wide range of fields, from automotive technology and culinary arts to cosmetology and information technology. This diversity allows students to pursue their passions and interests while gaining the skills needed for a successful career.
Empowering Families and Communities
For parents, encouraging their children to consider trade schools can be a powerful way to support their future success. By exploring all educational options, families can make informed decisions that align with their financial situation, career goals, and personal interests. Trade schools also play a crucial role in empowering communities by providing a skilled workforce that contributes to local economies and infrastructure.

Misconceptions about Trade Schools
There are several misconceptions about trade schools that often deter students and parents from considering them as a viable educational option. Let’s debunk some of the most common myths:
Trade Schools Are for Those Who Can’t Get into College: This is a prevalent misconception. Trade schools are not a fallback option for those who lack the grades or intellectual ability to attend a four-year college. Many students choose trade schools because they offer programs that align better with their career interests and aptitudes12.
Trade School Education Is Easier: Some people believe that learning a trade is easier than pursuing a traditional college degree. However, trade school programs are rigorous and require a high level of skill and dedication. They focus on hands-on, practical training that prepares students for real-world challenges12.
Trade School Graduates Earn Less: Another common myth is that trade school graduates do not earn as much as those with a four-year degree. In reality, many trade school careers offer competitive salaries. For example, dental hygienists, HVAC technicians, and electricians often earn substantial incomes, sometimes even more than some college graduates23.
Trade School Degrees Are Not Real Degrees: Some people think that trade school credentials are not as valuable as traditional college degrees. While trade schools often offer diplomas or certificates, many also provide associate degrees and even bachelor’s degrees in certain fields. These credentials are highly respected in their respective industries23.
Limited Career Options: There’s a misconception that trade school graduates are limited to one career path. In reality, the skills learned in trade schools are often transferable across various industries. For instance, an HVAC technician might also have skills in electrical work and welding, opening up multiple career opportunities2.
Credits Don’t Transfer: Some believe that credits earned at a trade school cannot be transferred to a four-year college. While this can be true in some cases, many trade schools have agreements with colleges that allow for credit transfers, especially for related fields of study2.
By addressing these misconceptions, we can better appreciate the value of trade schools and the opportunities they provide. Encouraging students to consider all educational paths, including trade schools, can lead to fulfilling and lucrative careers.
Conclusion
Trade schools offer a practical, cost-effective, and efficient path to a rewarding career. As parents and students navigate the complexities of post-secondary education, it’s essential to recognize the value and potential of trade schools. By considering this option, families can open doors to a world of opportunities and set the stage for a prosperous future.
