Displaying Leadership on a Date: A Guide for Men and Women
I came across the video below on my TikTok timeline and so many things bothered me. What bothered me the most was when the man would not let the woman go. Like he wanted her to understand he didn’t like the date, but he also was keeping her from leaving.
There are so many things wrong in this video and yet, my most concerning thing is that she looked trapped and scared. A date should never make someone feel like this even if it isn’t going well. There should be an amicable end, regardless of if it went well or not.
Tell us what you think. Was he wrong? Was she wrong? How could this have ending in a better way? Post your comments below or click the “leave a comment” button.
Tell us if you like more video content to go along with our newsletters. Your feedback is important to us.
Dating can be an exciting yet nerve-wracking experience. Displaying leadership on a date doesn't mean taking control of everything, but rather showing confidence, respect, and consideration for your partner. Here are some tips for both men and women to ensure a safe and enjoyable experience.
Steps Men Can Take to Ensure Safety
Plan Ahead: Choose a safe and comfortable location for the date. Make sure it's a place where both of you can feel at ease.
Communicate Clearly: Let your date know the plan in advance. This shows respect for their time and preferences.
Be Attentive: Pay attention to your date's comfort level. If they seem uneasy, ask if they would like to change the location or activity.
Respect Boundaries: Always respect your date's personal space and boundaries. Consent is crucial in any interaction.
Stay Sober: Avoid excessive drinking. Staying sober ensures you can make clear decisions and look out for each other's safety.
How Women Can Protect Themselves
Share Your Plans: Let a friend or family member know where you're going and who you're meeting.
Trust Your Instincts: If something feels off, don't hesitate to leave. Your safety is the top priority.
Stay Sober: Just like men, it's important to stay sober to make clear decisions.
Have an Exit Plan: Know how you'll get home if things don't go well. Keep some cash or a ride-hailing app handy.
Set Boundaries: Clearly communicate your boundaries and don't be afraid to enforce them.
Tips for Young Men When Things Aren't Going Well
Stay Calm: If you notice red flags, stay calm and composed. Avoid confrontation and focus on ending the date respectfully.
Be Honest: Politely express your concerns. Honesty is better than leading someone on.
Respectfully End the Date: If you feel the date isn't going well, it's okay to end it early. Be respectful and considerate in your approach.
Having Fun While Observing Compatibility
Engage in Conversation: Ask open-ended questions to get to know your date better. This helps in understanding their values and interests.
Be Yourself: Authenticity is key. Be genuine and let your true personality shine.
Enjoy the Moment: Focus on having a good time rather than overanalyzing every detail. Compatibility will reveal itself naturally.
Observe Reactions: Pay attention to how your date reacts to different situations. This can give you insights into their character.
Share Experiences: Engage in activities that you both enjoy. Shared experiences can help build a connection and reveal compatibility.
Examples
Planning Ahead: John planned a date at a cozy café he knew well. He informed his date, Sarah, about the location and time, ensuring she felt comfortable and excited about the evening.
Respecting Boundaries: During their date, Sarah mentioned she wasn't comfortable with crowded places. John immediately suggested moving to a quieter spot, showing his attentiveness and respect for her comfort.
Trusting Instincts: Emily felt uneasy during her date with Mark. She trusted her instincts and politely excused herself, ensuring her safety by calling a friend to pick her up.
By following these tips, both men and women can display leadership, ensure safety, and have a fun and meaningful dating experience. Remember, the key to a successful date is mutual respect, clear communication, and enjoying each other's company.

First Date Tips
First dates can be tricky, and sometimes things don't go as planned. Here are some common reasons why a date might end abruptly or leave one person feeling rejected, along with suggestions on how to handle these situations better:
Common Mistakes and Solutions
1. Lack of Communication
Mistake: Not clearly communicating intentions or expectations can lead to misunderstandings.
Solution: Be open and honest about your intentions from the start. If you're looking for a serious relationship, say so. If you're just looking to have fun, make that clear too.
2. Ignoring Boundaries
Mistake: Not respecting personal boundaries can make the other person feel uncomfortable or unsafe.
Solution: Always ask for consent and pay attention to non-verbal cues. If your date seems uncomfortable, back off and give them space.
3. Overly Critical or Judgmental
Mistake: Being overly critical or judgmental can make your date feel unappreciated or attacked.
Solution: Focus on positive aspects and be kind. If you notice something you don't like, consider whether it's a deal-breaker or something you can overlook.
4. Talking Too Much About Yourself
Mistake: Dominating the conversation and not letting your date share their thoughts and experiences.
Solution: Ask open-ended questions and show genuine interest in your date's life. A balanced conversation helps build a connection.
5. Not Being Present
Mistake: Being distracted by your phone or other things can make your date feel unimportant.
Solution: Put away your phone and focus on the person in front of you. Show that you value their time and company.
Tips for a Better First Date
Choose a Comfortable Setting: Pick a location where both of you can feel relaxed and at ease.
Be Punctual: Arriving on time shows respect for your date's time.
Dress Appropriately: Dress in a way that makes you feel confident and comfortable.
Be Yourself: Authenticity is attractive. Be genuine and let your true personality shine.
Listen Actively: Show that you're interested in what your date has to say by listening attentively and responding thoughtfully.
Keep the Conversation Light: Avoid heavy or controversial topics on the first date. Focus on getting to know each other.
Have an Exit Plan: If things aren't going well, it's okay to end the date early. Be polite and respectful in your approach.
Examples
Lack of Communication: Jane went on a date with Tom, who didn't mention he was looking for a serious relationship. Jane, who was just looking to have fun, felt pressured and left abruptly. Clear communication could have prevented this misunderstanding.
Ignoring Boundaries: During their date, Mike kept touching Sarah's arm despite her pulling away. Sarah felt uncomfortable and decided to leave. Respecting boundaries would have made the date more enjoyable for both.
Talking Too Much About Yourself: Alex spent the entire date talking about his achievements, leaving Emma feeling ignored. If Alex had asked Emma about her interests, the date might have gone better.
By avoiding these common mistakes and following these tips, you can create a more positive and enjoyable dating experience for both parties. Remember, the key to a successful date is mutual respect, clear communication, and having fun together.
