Kingdom Marriage: Walking in the Principle of Shared Purpose
In our lesson on Monday, we discussed oneness and how God calls all married couples to be like one.
Revisit that newsletter here:
We married couples can’t be one without the same mission, a shared purpose.
Walking together, I am reminded of how my husband, and I use to be side by side walking around both deployments to do tasks, eat chow, or to go out the base together. We were partners in our job which gave us time to get to know each other and learn how we were in agreement on many things.
As our dating life and marriage went on, we began to think, act, and become in step with the same goals, dreams, and purpose for out lives together. From homeschooling our kids, following Christ’s Kingdom message, down to a healthier lifestyle, we began a journey with a singular goal of never giving up on each other and doing the best we can to make our marriage work.
A Kingdom Marriage isn't just a union; it’s a calling. In such a relationship, both spouses understand that their marriage serves a higher purpose, rooted in shared faith, shared vision, and shared commitment to walking in the ways of God.
Amos 3:3 reminds us, “Do two walk together unless they have agreed to do so?”
This verse encapsulates the foundation of a Kingdom Marriage—a relationship that thrives when spouses align their hearts and minds on a common purpose.
The Biblical Foundation of Shared Purpose
God designed marriage to be a reflection of His covenant with His people—a partnership built on unity and direction. The principle of shared purpose speaks to this unity. It ensures that both husband and wife work toward goals that honor God, foster love, and reflect His kingdom. Without agreement and shared purpose, the journey becomes one of disconnection rather than fulfillment.
Practical Examples of Shared Purpose
To bring the principle to life, consider how shared purpose might manifest in day-to-day experiences:
Ministry Partnership: Imagine a couple who feels called to serve through a church ministry, such as youth outreach or missionary work. Together, they can pool their resources, talents, and time to build something impactful. For instance, the husband might lead Bible studies, while the wife manages administrative tasks and coordinates events.
Raising Godly Children: A shared purpose is beautifully reflected in the commitment to nurture children in faith. Parents can make time for weekly family devotionals, involve kids in service projects, and be intentional about modeling Christlike behavior. This not only strengthens their own relationship but creates a lasting legacy of faith for their children.
Supporting Individual Callings: Sometimes, shared purpose means actively supporting each other's unique callings. For example, a wife might be called to write Christian books, and her husband can provide encouragement and practical help, such as handling logistics or offering spiritual insight for her work. Similarly, a husband might pursue pastoral work while his wife builds supportive relationships with members of the congregation.
Steps to Cultivate Shared Purpose
Pray Together: Seek God’s guidance for your marriage’s purpose and ask Him to reveal the direction He has for you both.
Communicate Regularly: Share your dreams, visions, and aspirations openly with each other. Understanding each other’s heart aligns your path.
Set Goals: Create short- and long-term goals that reflect your shared vision—whether it’s growing your ministry, deepening faith in your family, or building community.
Serve Together: Engage in activities that promote your shared purpose, such as volunteering, teaching, or leading worship.
Walking in Agreement
Walking together in agreement is about knowing the “why” behind your marriage. It’s about understanding that the story of your love should point back to God’s glory. When you focus on Him as your ultimate guide, the paths you take will lead to a fulfilling and impactful Kingdom Marriage.
May we take this principle to heart and let our marriages be testimonies of God’s grace, unity, and purpose!

Shared Purpose and Oneness: A Harmonious Connection
The principle of shared purpose emphasizes alignment in vision and goals—a couple working together toward a mission that honors God. Meanwhile, the principle of oneness, drawn from Genesis 2:24, speaks to the spiritual, emotional, and physical unity between spouses. In a Kingdom Marriage, these two principles intertwine seamlessly. When spouses share a common purpose, they naturally move toward a deeper sense of oneness, and when they embrace oneness, their shared purpose becomes more meaningful and impactful.
How These Principles Work Together:
God-Centered Vision: Both principles are rooted in keeping God at the center of the marriage. By prioritizing shared spiritual practices like prayer and worship, couples grow closer to God and each other, fostering oneness while strengthening their shared purpose.
Unified Decision-Making: As spouses align their vision and purpose, they learn to make decisions as one—seeking God's guidance and agreeing on their direction in life, ministry, or family. This unity reflects the biblical concept of “walking together in agreement” (Amos 3:3).
Mutual Support in Callings: Supporting each other's unique callings and aspirations further combines shared purpose with oneness. For example, if one spouse feels called to ministry and the other assists by managing logistics or emotional needs, they live out both principles in harmony.
Resilience in Trials: Standing united in oneness helps couples endure challenges together, while a shared purpose gives them a reason to persevere. For instance, parents raising children in a Christ-centered home stay united in their mission, even during difficult moments.
Practical Example:
Imagine a couple who feels called to start a community outreach program. Their shared purpose is to serve others and glorify God. Through this, they strengthen their oneness by spending time together in prayer, planning, and serving. Their shared purpose fuels their spiritual and emotional unity, while their oneness sustains the passion and commitment needed to fulfill their calling.
In essence, shared purpose provides direction, while oneness provides the heart and strength behind the journey. Together, they enable a Kingdom Marriage to reflect God’s design, becoming a powerful testimony of His love and grace.
